Piccolo NurseryPiccolo Nursery

Welcome to Kirktonholme Nursery Piccolo. We are part of the Kirktonholme Nurseries group and we are situated at 57 Blair Road Coatbridge and provide quality part-time and full-time Childcare and Education for children aged 6 weeks to 5 years. The nursery is open week-days Monday to Friday from 7.45am until 5.45pm.
The nursery is within a central location with good links to public transport and main motorways systems. We are in Partnership with North Lanarkshire Council which allows you to claim for funding towards your child’s nursery fees when they turn 3 years of age. Due to our location we have very good relations with the local Primary Schools within the area which in turn leads to very positive transitions for children from Pre-School age to Primary 1.

Our nursery provides a safe, pleasant and stimulating environment which promotes active learning. Our facilities include – a secure entry system, disabled access and an outdoor area catering for all ages. We all enjoy a chat with parents at the end of your child’s nursery session, however, if you have any concerns we operate an open door policy and can be contacted at any time. Staff and children within the nursery are closely involved with maintaining the Health Promoting Nursery Award Scheme in which we have our Gold Award and also the Eco Schools programme which we have our Silver Award.

Our nursery was extensively refurbished in March 2009 and we provide care and education within our 4 playrooms. The rooms are:

Rainbow Room (0 – 1 year)

Sunshine Room (1 – 2 years)

Little Rascals Room (2 – 3 years)

and The Learning Lions Room (3 – 5 years).

Rainbow Room (0 – 1 Years) which holds 6 babies & Sunshine Room (1 – 2 Years) which holds 13 babies.

Within our nursery we have two 0 – 2 rooms which in total we can have 19 babies in at any one time. Ratios within these rooms are 1:3 which accounts for the large amount of staff you will meet. We have separated the rooms into a 0 – 1 room and a 1 – 2 room however we are flexible and at times will join up and come together throughout the day.

Both our Rainbow Room and our Sunshine Rooms are light and airy which provides a nice place for babies to relax and learn. Staff stimulates babies with equipment and resources to promote a wealth of experiences for young exploring minds, in a warm, safe and bright environment. Learning at this stage is done through sensory activities and the staff creates a caring relaxed environment where the children can safely explore.

Staff within these rooms plan, observe, monitor and evaluate using North Lanarkshire’s Birth to 3 documents – ‘Effective Early Development & Learning. The critical period from birth to 3 years.’ We plan based on the children’s age and stage of development and children are encouraged to learn through play and curiosity. Throughout the day your child will be encouraged to develop their knowledge and independence through praise and encouragement.

Little Rascals Room (2 – 3 Years) which holds 16 toddlers

In the Little Rascals Room we have two rooms, a cosy room and a messy room. The children love to participate in lots of messy play e.g. gloop, flour play, water play, sand play and pasta play to name a few. In the messy room we also have lots of art and craft resources which the children have access to and various adult led art and craft activities on a daily basis. In the messy room we also do a lot of baking and cooking activities in which the children can make their own snack and taste what they made.

In our cosy room we have a range of different areas such as a story corner with a wide variety of story books, song books, musical instruments and puppets to help children to develop their communication and social skills. We have a computer area which children can participate in learning games through ICT this helps to develop their hand-eye co-ordination skills. Children from a young age learn through imitation so we have a small world area with farm, dolls house etc as well as a large home corner where children can take on a variety of roles. A lot of under 3’s activities use a lot of sensory skills so we have a sensory area where children can explore various objects using their senses to learn and this is made up with natural materials including wood, metal etc.

Staff within the room plan, observe, monitor and evaluate using North Lanarkshire’s Birth to 3 documents – ‘Effective Early Development & Learning. The critical period from birth to 3 years.’ We plan based on the children’s interest and they have an input in their planning through the use of floorbooks. The children are encouraged to learn through play and curiosity. Throughout the day your child will be encouraged to develop their knowledge and independence through praise and encouragement.

Learning Lions (3 – 5 Years) which holds 23 children

Within our Learning Lions room we have a wide variety of areas to allow your child to develop and learn. We have a story corner, ICT are including a smartboard, small world area with dolls house, garage, dinosaurs etc, construction area, creative area, baking area, writing area and games area. The layout of the room allows children to choose the learning opportunities that they wish to use which encourages choice and independence. Throughout the day children also have access to the outdoor area to continue their learning outside.

We encourage all children to plan their own learning by prompting interests and allow them to ask questions about what they would like to know. Every child is an individual and each key worker is dedicated to providing them with the learning experiences best suited to their needs. We want to teach the children to evaluate their learning and challenge themselves by creating their next goal.

Staff within the Learning Lions plan using the Curriculum for Excellence and floorbooks. This Curriculum will be used in your child’s life until the age of 18 which allows consistency for your child and a smoother transition from nursery to primary and primary to secondary.

We want our children to eventually become responsible citizens, successful learners, effective contributors, confident individuals. When your child is making their final transition to school we will complete along with you a transition record which provides your chosen primary school with a detailed report of your child’s development stage.
