Tollcross Nursery

Tollcross Nursery

Kirktonholme Nursery Tollcross is a homely two-storey building situated within Drumover Drive, a residential area in the East End of Glasgow. Kirktonholme is part of a group of private nurseries providing childcare across the central belt of Scotland. The nursery is privileged to have a huge secured garden area to the rear which includes a baby garden and a welcoming garden space at the nursery entrance. We are within walking distance to Tollcross Park which has its very own miniature farm and also has access to other local amenities.

The nursery was established in March 2003 and has grown over the past 8 years, we currently provide daycare and education to 78 children between 8 am – 6 pm Monday to Friday on a full and part-time basis. We cater for children from Birth to Pre-school, providing part-time or full-time spaces. We work in partnership with Glasgow City Council and provide government funding for children aged 3 and over.

Our staff team work hard to create a welcoming and homely environment for our parents and children ensuring we are working closely with them and providing the best possible start for our children. We aim to meet each individual child’s specific learning needs and allow them to achieve their full potential. We pride ourselves on good communication and like to keep links strong between the nursery and parents and carers. We use various forms of communication such as verbal feedback, mobile photo messaging, texting, emailing, through the website, questionnaires and feedback question boards./p>

Kirktonholme Nursery is spread over two levels. We have two baby rooms situated on the ground floor which we can hold 9 babies, along with our toddler room which can care for 20 2-3-year-olds, and our Pre-school rooms which look after 40 children. We also have our Garden Room situated within our rear Garden which all age groups have access too.

Within our calm and secure baby rooms, there is 5 dedicated staff that follow the pre-birth to three guidelines to provide a variety of experiences that will stimulate each child and enthuse their learning within our care. The rooms are well resourced and the environment creates a wealth of experiences for young inquisitive minds, staff use an app called Famly to create good communication channels between them and the parents on a daily basis. The diaries include information on feeding, changes, sleeps and any activities or achievements the child has made through their day at nursery, this is brought to and from nursery each time the child attends. For older babies, we provide experiences that encourage building relationships and developing the senses and usually mean getting extremely messy. We provide sensory activities such as sand, water, gloop, gunk, foam play and painting. We also strive to ensure we are providing a rounded education and allow the children to self-select, promoting good physical development using climbing frames and dancing experiences. We understand that it can be a difficult transition for parents to leave their precious babies with someone new, so we provide an open-door policy that allows parents to drop in or call at any time they feel the need.

Within our busy 2-3 room, we have 4 enthusiastic staff who provide a stimulating environment that focuses on building children’s independence. Our 2-3 room staff use the pre-birth to three documents and also the 4 capacities from the curriculum for excellence to build our little learners into responsible young individuals. We promote confidence in our children and we provide experiences that will enhance their learning and provide for the individual. We allow our children to have independence within this age group and begin building on their self-help skills by providing a self-selective environment during most of the nursery day, we have areas that they can be creative, imaginative and innovative with various resources which stimulate their minds. Communication channels with parents are continued in this room with a daily sheet being sent home with information detailing if they have eaten, their toileting through the day, any periods of sleep, what experiences they have taken part in and any achievements they have made. We provide a lunch board which is situated at the main entrance of the room, this displays what your child has been offered on this particular day and they use their independence to stick their name onto wither they have eaten, some, none, or all. Staff work hard to ensure all children experience at least 40 minutes of physical play during their day with us by using the outdoor area and our resources or our sticky kids exercise CDs.

Our 3-5 Room is situated across the full top level of the nursery, the room has 3 experienced staff who provide a wealth of experiences to stimulate and develop the children in their care. Within this area of the nursery, we work with the Curriculum for Excellence which provides the best start for our pre-school children. We use the early level outcomes which run from age 3-5 giving children a good range of time to establish their learning styles. Our children are encouraged to be responsible citizens, confident individuals, effective contributors and successful learners, we strive to ensure our children are educated appropriately and prepared for their transition to school.

We have a designated creative area within our 3-5 room which allows the children to be artistic and have freedom of choice. All resources within the 3-5 room are out on display for the children to make a personal choice on what they would like to do. We use various apparatus to extend our learning opportunities and promote the children to plan their own learning. We are currently working on making our 3-5 room and indoor/outdoor nursery which provides continuous outdoor learning. We use our outdoor space extremely well within this age group and try to have a group of children out at all times using our resources outside. Our 3-5 children are very responsible and cater for most of their own learning, they are encouraged to dress themselves, wash themselves, serve their own meals, prepare their own snacks and care for one another.

We like to foster good relationships with our staff, children, parents and carers, outside agencies and the local community.

We work alongside most childcare voucher companies and do offer this as a method of payment.

Reviews

Staff are brilliant with my child, they know her down to a T. I can speak to them about anything at all; worries or my child’s development, and they will be able to help as much as they can. I am able to see photos on private social media of what my child has been up to throughout the day. They also keep a log of her development through an online journal that we can log into at any time. The nursery is clean, organised and well presented and I feel at ease leaving my baby here with the staff she knows well.

I would highly recommend this nursery. I feel my daughter has come on leaps since starting. All the staff are very welcoming and approachable and I am happy she joined.
